Books for Quantitative Aptitude (QA) section
- Arun Sharma – Highly recommended and since it is popular, it has its own thread on Pagalguy too.
- SK Verma – Good for clearing basics, goes into much detail and may get a tad boring for those who are used to this section. Those who are brand new, should buy this book over Arun Sharma as this one is more detailed than the former.
- Nishant Sinha – A good book but the above two shine up and beyond this one.

CAT, (Common Admission Test) is an entrance exam conducted by IIM on All-India basis for admissions to Management programmes offered by 10 IIM's (IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Indore, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Lucknow, IIM Raipur, IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak, IIM Shillong) and other Non-IIM Institutions who register for use of CAT scores every year. About 2 to 2.5 lakhs students take CAT exam every year, for thousands of seats including about 2500(dynamic) seats of IIM's.
CAT exam which is the first step for admission to the IIMs and which is now a CBT( Computer Based Test), as announced by IIM on 1st may 2009, conventionally comprises of three sections to evaluate the candidate's quantitative, verbal, logical and data interpretaion abilities, through questions related to English language, statistics, geometry, logical reasoning, current affairs etc. The right for increase/ decrease in number of questions in the test lies with IIM. The multiple-choice based test, of 2 hours 30 minutes duration, consists of 60 questions, awarding you 4 marks on every right answer and deducting 1 mark on every wrong selection. It is held/starts(as per the current CBT pattern, which needs scheduling) on the third Sunday of November each year (once in a year).
After the exam, in January next year IIMs announces the eligible candidates for Group discussion and Personal Interview calls.
The duration of the test is 2 hours and 30 minutes including initial 15 minute tutorial. No breaks will be given during the test. The test consists of questions that evaluate a candidate’s quantitative, verbal, and logical & data interpretation abilities. Therefore, there are a total of three sections in the test. There will be about 60 questions in the test.
CAT Eligibility
The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Differently Abled (DA)categories, awarded by any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.
The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be calculated based on the practice followed by the university/institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree. In case the candidates are awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the conversion of grades/CGPA to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure certified by the university/ institution from where they have obtained the bachelor's degree. In case the university/ institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result with 100.
Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed degree requirements and are awaiting results can also apply. IIMs may verify eligibility at various stages of the selection process. Prospective candidates must maintain a valid and unique email account throughout the selection process.
